Simulated Jury Selection Workshop Provides Insights in the Practice

Jury Selection

March 11, 2014

Students, alumni, faculty and staff gathered to watch accomplished trial attorneys Caren Litvin and Andrew J. Stern, partner at Kline & Specter, simulate a jury selection voir dire before U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy R. Rice, who oversaw the process. Also joining the panel was Drexel Law alumna, Elizabeth Crawford, who also practices at Kline & Specter.

The program, which simulated a full jury selection process in a hypothetical medical malpractice case, provided insights on how to recognize a good juror, what questions to ask potential jurors and what to expect from judges and opposing counsel.

Both the presiding judge and attorneys focused on recognizing signs of impartiality, bias and past juror history that might influence a juror's decision.  The importance of attorney ethics in the jury selection process was also stressed.

Besides the selection process, the attorneys conducted things like sidebars out in the open, for the benefit of the audience.  This provided students and newly admitted attorneys in the audience a "behind-the-scenes" view into many of the conversations that otherwise occur in private between the judge and attorneys in the case.
