3L Argues Case Before U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit April 19, 2012 Kristen Sawicki, a third-year student, will argue a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit on April 19. Sawicki will appear on behalf of a client represented by the law school’s Appellate Litigation Clinic. The clinic is representing a permanent resident of the U.S. who was deported after being convicted of possessing marijuana. A federal court rejected his effort to remain in the U.S., finding him ineligible for the order of removal to be cancelled, since he had not lived here for seven continuous years. Students from the clinic, led by Professor Richard Frankel, hope to overturn the ruling, contending the lower court had made an invalid interpretation of immigration law that defines when continuous residence ends. Sawicki is the fourth student from the law school who has had an opportunity to argue a case before a U.S. Court of Appeals since the clinic opened in 2010.
