Professor David S. Cohen Critiques Justice’s Opinion of Death-Row Inmate’s Appeal in Philadelphia Inquirer

May 18, 2011

Professor David S. Cohen's response to Pennsylvania Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille's recent concurring opinion in the appeal of death-row inmate Mark Spotz appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer's Letters to the Editor section on May 17.

In his opinion, Justice Castille assailed federal defense lawyers for their "zealous pursuit of what is difficult to view as anything but a political cause: to impede and sabotage the death penalty in Pennsylvania."

Professor Cohen's letter criticized Justice Castille's response despite the fact that courts continually find errors in death penalty cases. For more on the case and Justice Castille's opinion, click here.
