Drexel Skype: Collaboration for Our Community
August 24, 2017
Skype for Business is now available to Drexel students, faculty, and professional staff. Drexel Skype, an Office 365 service, offers community collaboration through instant messaging, voice and video, connection with personal Skype and Zoom meetings, and more. Browser plug-ins are available for the Web version, while apps can be downloaded for mobile devices from the appropriate app store.
What Can Drexel Skype Do?
Drexel Skype supports conversations and meetings for 2-250 participants. Meetings can be scheduled in advance, and participants can join discussions already in progress. Transcripts of text chats are stored in the "Conversation History" folder of your Outlook mailbox.
You can modify your status to let friends and colleagues know when you are available, in a meeting, or away, and if you are in the office, at home, or elsewhere. You can also hide your availability for periods when you are not accepting messages.
Though Drexel Skype is not intended for it, it can connect to public Skype. However, the security and privacy that internal communication provides does not apply to such an internal-external connection.
How to Use Drexel Skype
For more information, see the Skype for Business help center that Microsoft updates as new features are added. Click the "Get Started" link in the "Quick Start" section.
The Skype for Business help center describes both standard and optional features and services. Students, faculty, and professional staff have access to the standard features. Optional services, not included with Drexel Skype, require an additional fee. The dial-in conferencing feature, where participants can join a meeting or conference call via the Skype for Business app or by phoning in, will be available for purchase by departments later in 2017.
