The IExE Director:
As one of the leading research universities concerned with technology, Drexel University aims to mobilize its intellectual and research capital to facilitate basic research, nurture multi-disciplinary partnerships, and provide solutions to challenges at the nexus of energy and the environment. In the fall of 2013, Drexel University undertook a bold initiative in the creation of the AJ Drexel Institute for Energy and the Environment (IExE). This institute serves as the focal point for multi-disciplinary research, learning, workforce development and community engagement on a broad range of topics related to energy and its impact on the environment.
Capitalizing on the University’s increasing research profile, the Institute will mobilize the University’s intellectual resources and infrastructure capabilities to address regional and global concerns in energy and the environment across a broad range of issues ranging from public health to economic development in order to advance public literacy about IExE themes. The Institute is expected to become as a new national model for university engagement with an evolving energy and innovation ecosystem.
The IExE has engaged faculty across all of the colleges and schools at Drexel, and seeks to build on the strong professional training and experience that our students acquire in the renowned Drexel Co-operative program, as well as the extensive ties Drexel has established with industry, government, and the community. This initiative fits with the overall growth strategy of Drexel University that has led to a broad thematic expansion and the development of strong areas of research excellence.
The 2013-18 University Strategic Plan also calls for the creation of an Innovation Neighborhood to catalyze research with industry and enterprise. This will be a centerpiece of research and innovation in our region and will provide an exciting hub for the IExE to develop and grow.
IExE seeks a Director who is a visionary thought leader on emerging energy and environmental issues. It is expected that the director will reach out to relevant business, government, and community entities and integrate effectively the academic and research strengths of the University towards the creation of novel research programs, entrepreneurial strategies, and innovative technological and policy solutions to address the complex challenges in the area of energy and its impact on the environment. The Director will report directly to the executive leadership of the University and is expected to play a significant role in recruiting the next generation of faculty leaders to advance the mission of the IExE.
