The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), Accelerating Drug Discovery for Frontotemporal Degeneration

Funding: Max of $40,000 in direct costs for 1 yr, plus 10% indirect costs
Purpose: High-risk pilot grants to test novel ideas. Funding is provided for one year to test innovative ideas or untested methods and gather sufficient preliminary data to apply for longer-term funding. Uniting Against Lung Cancer

Funding: Up to $100,000 (across 2 years)
Purpose: To jumpstart new projects leading to improved treatments and a cure for lung cancer, including non-small cell and small cell lung cancer. Must have a clear hypothesis and research plan to be completed within 2 year grant term. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

Jain Foundation (for LGMD2B/Miyoshi Research)
Deadline: Researchers are welcome to contact the the foundation with a pre-proposal at any time. Typically the foundation responds to grant submissions within 4-6 weeks.
Funding: $50,000 to $150,000 and up.
Purpose: The explicit goal of the Jain Foundation is to expedite development of a treatment or cure for LGMD2B/Miyoshi. LGMD2B and Miyoshi are both caused by inherited genetic mutations in the gene for dysferlin. The project must have direct relevance to dysferlin deficiencies - either to extend understanding of the disease or a unique approach to a treatment for the disease. Project should not have been performed elsewhere and sufficient due diligence should have been executed to find out if the same project is currently being studied in another lab.

MEDICAL EDUCATION ASSESSMENT
Edward J. Stemmler, M.D. Medical Education Research Fund, National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME)
Deadline: Jul 02, 2012 (LOI); Jan 14, 2013 (Full Proposal)
Funding: $150,000 for up to 2 years
Purpose: For research/development of innovative evaluation methodology or techniques, with potential to advance assessment in medical education or practice at eligible medical schools. Expected outcomes include advances in the theory, knowledge, or practice of assessment at any point along the continuum of medical education, from undergraduate and graduate education and training, through practice. Collaborative investigations within or among institutions are eligible.
Eligibility: Medical schools accredited by the LCME or the AOA. Additional eligibility requirements include: unlimited submissions for medical schools, but an individual may not be PI on more than 1 LOI. Designated PI must represent the primary applicant institution and must be responsible for project oversight and reporting. Applications addressing the same substantive study topic by the same investigators may be submitted for Fund consideration no more than 3 times.

Muscular Dystrophy Association - MDA Research Grant & MDA Development Grant

Funding: Research Grant, Unlimited amount, 1 to 3 years; Development Grant, Up to $180,000, 1 to 3 yrs.
Purpose: To support research aimed at developing treatments for the muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system
Eligibility: Research Grant. Must be independent investigators and hold an M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc or equivalent. Must be professional or faculty member (Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor) at an educational, medical or research institution. Applicants must be qualified to conduct and mentor a program of original research. Development Grant, must hold an M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc. or equivalent and be member of research team. Must be qualified to conduct program of original research under supervision of PI.

Muscular Dystrophy Association- Clinical Research Training Grant

Funding: $90,000 per year for 2 years
Purpose: to provide promising young clinicians with the research training opportunities needed to become productive clinical investigators in neuromuscular disease research. This training opportunity is designed to be compatible with the requirements of a traditional clinical fellowship in neuromuscular disease and any forthcoming requirements for certification in neuromuscular disease.
Eligibility: must hold a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree and be licensed to practice medicine in the state or province in which the grant will be given; be board eligible or board certified in neurology, child neurology or physical medicine and rehabilitation at the time of the award.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Purpose: The Edmond J. Safra Core Programs for PD Research, part of the Foundation's annual Pipeline Programs, is a series of three funding opportunities that seek investigator-initiated proposals. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for the Target Validation program, which supports work demonstrating whether modulation of a novel biological target has impact in a PD-relevant animal model – an essential early step to the development of potential targeted therapies.

SLEEP RESEARCH
American Sleep Medicine Foundation, Strategic Research Award.

Amount: Up to two one-year grants of $75,000
Purpose: Planning grants or research grants for efforts to improve quality of healthcare delivery in the sleep medicine field. Urgent need for 1) identifying a better framework for healthcare delivery in the field of sleep medicine such as the patient-centered home model; 2) establishing or enhancing patient registries that help healthcare providers better monitor and deliver healthcare while assisting outcomes research; and 3) developing new patient-outcome measures or better validating existing measures to assist healthcare delivery and policymaking.
Eligibility: Physicians (M.D., DO) and Ph.D.s. A physician or scientist who is an active AASM member should be affiliated with project. Competitive application should have significant input from health services researchers and/or biostatisticians in conception/design of proposal or planning grant. The role of the sleep physician/scientist should be clearly defined in the project’s scope.

SPINAL RESEARCH
International Spinal Research Trust

Funding: Support for a post-doctoral salary plus laboratory consumables for up to 3 years. Funding also available for equipment where justified and essential for project objectives.
Purpose: To develop reliable treatments for paralysis caused by a broken back or neck. RFP for proposals that address or help identify clinically relevant effective treatments in either severe or chronic spinal cord injuries. Proposals that address both criteria are especially welcomed.

SURGERY
American Surgical Association Foundation (ASAF) Fellowship

Funding: $75,000 per year, renewable
Purpose: To support and encourage young surgeons who choose careers in investigation and academic surgery. During the fellowship years, the awardee should have a primary role in research and teaching. The fellow should have a faculty position following the fellowship in the department of surgery of the sponsoring institution.
Eligibility: Ph.D.., M.D., other professional. The applicant must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in general surgery or a surgical specialty and hold a faculty appointment in an accredited medical school or a similar medical institution. The application for the fellowship must be submitted within five years from the time that the applicant has completed their residency. Acceptance of other career development or fellowship awards precludes application for the ASAF Fellowship.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation

Purpose: Student Research Training Awards are meant to attract high quality health profession students to biomedical and behavioral research applicable to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Research Training Grants further the development of experienced scientific investigators who are committed to problems related to oral and maxillofacial surgery, and encourage promising lines of research and clinical investigation. The Zimmer Award offers $55,000 to an experienced investigator whose research is focused on implantology.
Eligibility: The eligibility requirements for the Research Support Grant allow a non-OMS (Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeon) to serve as the principal investigator as long as the co-principal investigator is a qualified OMS in an active role.
