AO Foundation Start-up Grant Program
Deadline: July 15, 2012
Funding: Up to 60,000 CHF (approximately 65,345 USD)
Purpose: To support international advancement in the surgical treatment of trauma and degenerative disorders of the musculoskeletal system through research, development and education.
Eligibility: Young investigators who are within five years of the completion of his/her terminal degree (M.D., D.V.M., Ph.D., etc.) or within five years of initiation of his/her first assistant professor position at an academic institution.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation

Deadline: July 15, 2012
Funding: $12,500 (Student Research Training) to $75,000 (Research Support); $55,000, (Zimmer/Implantology)
Purpose: Student Research Training Awards are meant to attract high quality health profession students to biomedical and behavioral research applicable to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Research Training Grants further the development of experienced scientific investigators who are committed to problems related to oral and maxillofacial surgery, and encourage promising lines of research and clinical investigation. The Zimmer Award offers $55,000 to an experienced investigator whose research is focused on implantology.
Eligibility: The eligibility requirements for the Research Support Grant allow a non-OMS (Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeon) to serve as the principal investigator as long as the co-principal investigator is a qualified OMS in an active role.

American Diabetes Association Development Awards

Deadline: July 15, 2012
Funding: For Junior Faculty Awards, $120,000 per year for three years; for Career Development Awards, $150,000 per year for five years
Purpose: Junior Faculty Awards support new investigators who are establishing their independence in diabetes research. Applicants can have any level of faculty appointment up through assistant professor. Career Development Awards are designed to assist outstanding Assistant Professor level faculty investigators in conducting diabetes-related research. The award supports an individual's salary and research project to enable the investigator to advance his/her career as an independent investigator.

American Diabetes Association General Research Awards

Deadline: July 15, 2012
Funding: For Basic Science Awards, $115,000 per year for three years; for Clinical/Translational Awards, $200,000 per year for three years
Purpose: Basic Science Awards provide grant support to both new and established investigators; applications will be considered in any area that is relevant to the etiology or pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications. Clinical/Translational Awards are designed to support patient-oriented research in diabetes. For the purpose of this award, clinical research is defined as research directly involving humans, and includes educational, psychosocial, behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research; also studies of normal physiology and mechanisms of disease.

Whitney Foundation, Helen Hay, Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

Deadline: July 16, 2012
Funding: $147,000 across 3 years, contingent on satisfactory performance: $48,000 year 1, $49,000 year 2, $50,000 year 3. Research allowance of $2,500/year. Dependent child allowance $1,000/year per child.
Purpose: To support early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences.  The foundation grants financial support to help further the careers of people engaged in biological or medical research.
Eligibility: Candidates who hold, or are in the final stages of obtaining, Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree and are seeking beginning postdoctoral training in basic biomedical research are eligible to apply for a fellowship.

Purpose:  To support mid-career investigators with an established record of accomplishments; candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular science as indicated by prior publication history and scientific accomplishments.    
Eligibility: Must have an M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent and be faculty/staff member; must also have current national-level funding as PI (or co-PI) on an R01 grant or its equivalent (e.g. VA Merit Award, NSF Grant, or PI of a project on a Program Project Grant from NIH).  At time of award, must have at least 4 years but no more than 9 years since first faculty/staff appointment at assistant professor level or equivalent.

The LAM Foundation
Deadline: July 30, 2012
Funding: $150,000 over 3 years
Purpose: To support projects that focus on the genetic regulation of smooth muscle growth or the development of a smooth muscle cell line that is representative of the LAM lesion.
Eligibility: Scientists who wish to apply for LAM research funding must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI). LOIs are reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) for scientific merit and alignment with The LAM Foundation mission. SAB invitations to submit full proposals are extended to applicants whose LOI proposals are considered competitive, but invitations are not a prerequisite for submission.

ALZHEIMER’S & RELATED DISORDERS

The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), Accelerating Drug Discovery for Frontotemporal Degeneration

Deadline: September 6, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: Up to $150,000
Purpose: AFTD provides support for basic and clinical research in frontotemporal degeneration and related clinical conditions (frontotemporal dementias, primary progressive aphasia, progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal syndrome). Priorities include:
• Development and testing of novel high throughput screening assays
• Medicinal chemistry on lead compounds
• Identification and in vitro testing of potentially disease modifying lead compounds
• ADME, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics on lead compounds

American Health Assistance Foundation Alzheimer's Disease Standard Awards

Purpose: To provides significant funding for researchers who have already generated some amount of preliminary data, but often still require significant progress before they can apply to governmental or industrial funding agencies.

Purpose: to take a highly innovative proposal with modest preliminary data and give investigators the opportunity to prove their ideas. ARTHRITIS

Arthritis Foundation, Clinical to Research Transitional Award
Deadline: August 1, 2012
Funding: Up to $60,000
Purpose: To support M.D.s who are clinically trained in adult or pediatric rheumatology and intend to pursue a research career in academic rheumatology.
Eligibility: Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree. Candidates holding Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees are not eligible, but those holding Masters degrees who meet the other requirements are eligible. US citizenship is not required but the applicant must hold a full-time appointment at a US institution.

Arthritis Foundation, Innovative Research Grant
Deadline: August 1, 2012
Funding: Up to $200,000 over 2 years
Purpose: To stimulate new approaches to solving arthritis, particularly in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Osteoarthritis (OA), and Juvenile Arthritis (JA). The program supports basic and clinical research of independent investigators.
Eligibility: Individuals with doctoral degrees (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent) at the assistant professor level or higher. Multi-institutional collaborations are encouraged. Multi-institutional proposals may include collaborators from outside the United Sates but the lead institution must be based in the USA. Principal investigator must be a US citizen or permanent resident at the time of application.

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Pilot Research Grants
Deadline: New applications accepted on ongoing basis.
Funding: Max of $40,000 in direct costs for 1 yr, plus 10% indirect costs
Purpose: High-risk pilot grants to test novel ideas. Funding is provided for one year to test innovative ideas or untested methods and gather sufficient preliminary data to apply for longer-term funding.  Supports fundamental as well as applied studies, non-clinical or clinical in nature, including projects in patient management, care and rehabilitation.
Eligibility: Person indicated as PI in an application is personally and actively responsible for conduct of research and considered eligible by his or her institution to apply for a research grant. Applications for Pilot Research Projects under the direction of postdoctoral fellows or for graduate students will not be accepted. Pilot awards may not support dissertation work for a graduate student. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply for one of the Society's programs of research training.

Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation - Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards
Deadline:  August 15, 2012
Funding: Level 1 up to $156,000 over 3 years; Level 2 up to $186,000 over 3 years
Purpose: To support exceptional early career researchers pursuing innovative cancer research having the potential to significantly impact understanding of and/or approaches to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer.  The Foundation's mission is to identify and support researchers who are committed to discovery leading to new understanding of the cell and how it becomes cancerous, as well as innovative approaches to the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of all forms of the disease.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold M.D., M.D. / Ph.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree; identify a faculty mentor with whom a research plan will be developed, executed and supervise; and have not already accepted a postdoctoral research fellowship award.

  • Level 1: Basic and physician-scientists must have received degrees on or after Oct 15, 2010; began in sponsor's labs after Oct 15, 2010; and devote 100% of time to Damon Runyon-supported research activities.
  • Level 2: Physician-scientist applicants must have completed residencies and clinical training on or after Oct 15, 2008; must be board eligible at start date of Fellowship, and able to devote at least 80% of time to Damon Runyon-supported research activities.

Uniting Against Lung Cancer
Deadline:  August 15, 2012 (full proposal)
Funding:   Up to $100,000 (across 2 years)
Purpose:   To jumpstart new projects leading to improved treatments and a cure for lung cancer, including non-small cell and small cell lung cancer.
Eligibility: Must have a clear hypothesis and research plan to be completed within 2 year grant term. Investigators at all levels, including Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellows, will be funded through the Legacy Program and are encouraged to apply. Collaborations with industry partners are also strongly encouraged; however the Principal Investigator is required to be an academic researcher.

Novo Nordisk Diabetes Innovation Award Program - Early Exploration Award

Funding: Up to $250,000 over 2 years, plus indirect costs
Purpose: To support new and established scientists in their exploration of novel hypotheses in the area of diabetes and obesity research. The aim of this research award program is to help scientists substantiate early innovation research efforts and clarify if their hypotheses could result in new treatment options for diabetes and obesity.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold full-time faculty positions or the equivalent at accredited university-affiliated institutions. Applicants must hold a Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D. degree or the equivalent health, science or engineering related degree. The application must not contain any confidential information.

Novo Nordisk - Innovation Award Program: Proof of Principle Award
Deadline:  August 1, 2012 by 8:00 p.m.
Funding:  Up to $500,000 over two years, plus indirect costs
Purpose:  To support nonclinical research for the validation of early-stage innovations in the treatment of diabetes or obesity with sufficient supporting data to conclude on nonclinical proof of principle (PoP) studies. 
The types of research eligible for support include:

  • New biological targets amenable to protein-based therapeutics;
  • Research exploring novel protein effects and functions; and
  • Protein-based science technologies including oral and injection delivery concepts.

Eligibility:  Must be full-time faculty and hold a Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D. degree or equivalent. Must be citizens or permanent residents. May not receive funding from any other source for the proposed research or related research.

EPILEPSY

The Epilepsy Therapy Project
Deadline: August 9, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: Unspecified
Purpose: To drive the development of new therapies for epilepsy, accelerating the advancement of research from the laboratory to the patient, and to advance the development of new therapies including but not limited to medicines, biologics or devices.
Eligibility: These grants are awarded only to programs that have progressed beyond the basic science discovery stage. Investigators are strongly advised to have their compounds screened, as appropriate, by the NINDS ASP Program.

American Epilepsy Society

Purpose: To provide seed support to encourage innovative basic or clinical research associated with the epilepsy field. The proposed project requires the participation of one or more investigators outside the candidate’s area of expertise, preferably in a different department or a different institution.

GENETIC/INHERETED  DISEASES

Jain Foundation (for LGMD2B/Miyoshi Research)
Deadline: Researchers are welcome to contact the foundation with a pre-proposal at any time. Typically the foundation responds to grant submissions within 4-6 weeks.
Funding:  $50,000 to $150,000 and up
Purpose: To expedite development of a treatment or cure for LGMD2B/Miyoshi. LGMD2B and Miyoshi are both caused by inherited genetic mutations in the gene for dysferlin.  The project must have direct relevance to dysferlin deficiencies - either to extend understanding of the disease or a unique approach to a treatment for the disease. Project should not have been performed elsewhere.

Hereditary Disease Foundation

Funding: Up to $50,000
Purpose: The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's disease. Support research projects that will contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect in Huntington's disease. Areas of interest include trinucleotide expansions, animal models, gene therapy, neurobiology and development of the basal ganglia, cell survival and death, and intercellular signaling in striatal neurons.

HEART DISEASE AND CRITICAL CARE

Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation - Research Awards
Deadline:  September 2, 2012
Funding:  Up to $50,000 across 1 year
Purpose:  To support innovative basic, clinical, or translational studies relevant to the cause or treatment of cardiomyopathy in children under the age of 18 years.  Provides seed funding to investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collecting of preliminary data to help secure long-term funding from other sources. CCF expects to make award decisions by January 2013.
Eligibility:  M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent; faculty appointment, and proven ability to pursue independent research as evidenced in publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Medtronic Foundation, HeartRescue Grant Program

Funding: $90,000 over 3 years max
Purpose: The goal of the HeartRescue program in the United States is to have a long-term impact in communities by creating a new generation of people who will understand the risk factors for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), will recognize SCA when it happens, and take immediate action to help save a life when it does.. 
Eligibility:  Priority will be given to schools, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies that develop or improve existing components of a comprehensive school-based SCA education and emergency response plan.

Muscular Dystrophy Association- Clinical Research Training Grant
Deadline: August 15, 2012
Funding: $90,000 per year for 2 years
Purpose: to provide promising young clinicians with the research training opportunities needed to become productive clinical investigators in neuromuscular disease research. This training opportunity is designed to be compatible with the requirements of a traditional clinical fellowship in neuromuscular disease and any forthcoming requirements for certification in neuromuscular disease.
Eligibility: must hold a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree and be licensed to practice medicine in the state or province in which the grant will be given; be board eligible or board certified in neurology, child neurology or physical medicine and rehabilitation at the time of the award.

Ittleson Foundation Mental Grants

Funding: Up to $85,000
Purpose: To bring its venture capital approach to philanthropy to this area. The foundation is interested in projects that fight the stigma associated with mental illness; utilize new knowledge and current technological advances to improve programs and services for people who have mental illness; and advance preventative mental health efforts.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Healthy Eating Research

Funding: Up to $100,000
Purpose: To fund and communicate strategic and timely research addressing key evidence needed to advance RWJF's policy priorities — providing advocates, decision-makers, and policy-makers with innovative, solution-oriented, policy-relevant environmental and policy studies to guide policy action.

Eligibility: Those holding the academic rank of Assistant Professor (or Research Assistant Professor) within a tenure track (or Research track) appointment, i.e. not Instructor, are eligible to apply for these research starter grants, providing their proposed research is neither directly nor indirectly subsidized to any significant degree by an extramural support mechanism.

SLEEP RESEARCH

American Sleep Medicine Foundation, Strategic Research Award.
Deadline:  August 15, 2012
Amount:  Up to two one-year grants of $75,000
Purpose:  Planning grants or research grants for efforts to improve quality of healthcare delivery in the sleep medicine field. Urgent need for 1) identifying a better framework for healthcare delivery in the field of sleep medicine such as the patient-centered home model; 2) establishing or enhancing patient registries that help healthcare providers better monitor and deliver healthcare while assisting outcomes research; and 3) developing new patient-outcome measures or better validating existing measures to assist healthcare delivery and policymaking.
Eligibility:  Physicians (M.D., DO) and Ph.D.s. A physician or scientist who is an active AASM member should be affiliated with project. Competitive application should have significant input from health services researchers and/or biostatisticians in conception/design of proposal or planning grant. The role of the sleep physician/scientist should be clearly defined in the project’s scope.

SPINAL CORD RESEARCH

Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation

Purpose: To carry out and promote basic and clinical research related to spinal cord injury. The goals of the individual research grant program are to perform or promote basic and clinical research related to spinal cord injury by encouraging new investigator's work (including Ph.D. students and technicians) on regeneration and recovery processes but also to encourage well-established researchers to develop new ideas and/or to transfer their efforts of other areas into spinal cord research.
Eligibility: Wings for Life grants are not restricted to any particular country and the foundation thereby welcome worldwide applications. Only one research proposal per Principal Investigator can be submitted.
