Dr. Rohan Tikekar Awarded Drexel- IExE Grant
May 5, 2014
Drexel University’s Office of Research announced Roahn Tikekar, PhD, an assistant professor of food science as a recipient of the IExE Seed Funding Grant. In collaboration with Christopher Sales, PhD, an assistant professor of environmental engineering, the project titled Novel Photochemical and Biological Processes for Decontamination of Flowback Water from Hydraulic Fracturing of the Marcellus Shale was funded with a $50,000 grant.
This collaborative study will focus on the process of hydraulic fracturing and the contamination of flowback (waste water) from fracking. Tikekar and Sales will research potential treatment strategies or technologies that make fracking of shale gas and oil more sustainable and environmentally friendly. The two concepts that will be explored will be photochemical and biological methods, alone and in combination to remove contaminants in the flowback.
In related news, Tikekar was also a recipient of the 2014 Phospholipid Best Paper Award from AOCS for an article he collaborated on entitled “Effect of Antioxidant Properties of Lecithin Emulsifier on Oxidative Stability of Encapsulated Bioactive Compounds”.
