Drexel Green Committee Reports and Recommendations Presentation
For a Green Strategic Plan at Drexel University

Since October 2008, eight different Drexel Green Committees of students, faculty and staff have been researching what other colleges and universities are doing with respect to environmental sustainability, considering various national tests and criteria, and receiving “green ideas” sent to them via the Drexel Green website. With those data, the Committees developed recommendations for Drexel University to implement over the next five years. The eight committees were: Academics, Buildings, Communications, Community, Events and Planning, Operations, Research, and Student Life. This presentation gave members of the Drexel community an opportunity to provide feedback and ideas for adoption into a Green Strategic Plan for the University.

Dr. Patricia Jellison, Chief of Global Change Research & Development, U.S. Geological Survey

Pat Jellison is Chief of Global Change Research & Development for the US Geological Survey, which includes integrative climate change research activities conducted by USGS scientists across the country and across multiple fields of science, including geology, biology, hydrology, geography, paleoclimatology and economics. She joined the USGS in 2005 after more than twenty years as a research scientist and department chief for the Smithsonian Institution, where her teaching and research included studies of dune stability and desertification in African deserts, the interactions of humans and wildlife in arid landscapes, and museum artifact database development and management. She is also a past Lecturer for the Smithsonian National Associates Program and a Content Expert for the Discovery Channel and IMAX Films, and a past Chair of the Geological Society of America’s Committee on Geology and Public Policy. She recently completed a six-month detail to the US Climate Change Science Program to write a coordinated research plan for the 13 federal agencies that are a part of CCSP. Dr. Jellison received her B.S. in Geology from the University of Nebraska and her Ph.D in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis.

From 1993 to 1999, Dr. Speth served as administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and chair of the UN Development Group. Prior to his service at the UN, he was Founder and President of the World Resources Institute; professor of law at Georgetown University; Chairman of the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality; and Senior Attorney and Co-founder, Natural Resources Defense Council. Throughout his career, Dr. Speth has provided leadership and entrepreneurial initiatives to many task forces and committees involved in combating environmental degradation.

J. Timmons Roberts is Chancellor Professor of Sociology and Researcher at the Institute for the Theory and Practice of International Relations at The College of William and Mary. His research specializes in climate change; environmental sociology; globalization, development and social change; environmental governance and policy; and environmental justice. He is also the James Martin 21st Century Professor, Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University.

Nels Johnson is the Director of Conservation Programs at the Nature Conservancy where he has directed conservation planning and activities since 2001. His areas of expertise include sustainable forest management, ecosystem management, setting biodiversity conservation priorities and protecting ecosystem services.
Wayne Klockner is a Vice President of The Nature Conservancy and State Director for Massachusetts. Klockner joined the Massachusetts chapter in 1999 after four years with the Conservancy’s Asia Pacific Program, the last three as Senior Advisor in Indonesia where he shepherded the Conservancy through a period of significant expansion to preserve Indonesia’s biodiversity.

Dr. Paul G. Falkowski is professor of biochemisty and biophysics, physiological adaptation at Rutgers University. His research interests include biogeochemical cycles, photosynthesis, biological oceanography, molecular biology, biochemisty and biophysics, physiological adaptation, plant physiology, evolution, mathematical modeling, and symbiosis. Dr. Falkowski serves on the Rutgers Board of Governors as Professor in Geological and Marine Science, and is Director of the Rutgers Energy Institute.

Dr. Michael Schwartz is Senior Vice President of Commercial Strategy for Duke Energy Generation Services, an unregulated affiliate of Duke Energy. In this capacity he leads the group which focuses on strategy and strategic initiatives including the structuring of Duke’s commercial carbon business. Dr. Schwartz has more than 25 years of experience in all aspects of energy project development, project financing and structuring, technology commercialization, corporate development and strategic planning.

Dr. David Robinson is a physical geographer and climatologist. His research interests run the spatial gamut from global to local, with a focus on developing a better understanding of the climate system. As New Jersey’s State Climatologist, Dr. Robinson conducts research of an applied nature that focuses on the diverse weather and climate of the Garden State. This includes topics such as climate change, drought, flooding, and issues involving agriculture, transportation, public safety and commerce.

Dr. Heidi Cullen, The Weather Channel

Since joining The Weather Channel in 2003, Dr. Cullen has played a key role in building the network’s climate program, adding explanation, depth, and perspective to climate stories and strengthening the network’s relationships within the scientific community.
She received her doctorate in climatology and ocean-atmosphere dynamics at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Her dissertation focused on understanding the impacts and dynamics of the North Atlantic Oscillation, an important climate influence. As a post-doc, she received a NOAA Climate & Global Change Fellowship and spent two years working at the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction.
Dr. Cullen also works as a senior research scientist with Climate Central. This non profit, non partisan organization is dedicated to providing the public as well as policy makers with the latest peer-reviewed information on global climate change. Dr. Cullen’s dual role in academia and at The Weather Channel allows audiences direct access to the latest insights from the academic and scientific communities working on climate change. Climate Central is a non profit organization based in Princeton, NJ, with another bureau opening near Stanford University.
