• Dan Moscovici presented a paper at the annual Society of American Foresters (SAF) meeting in Orlando, Florida. This paper examined the link that land preservation has with the environment, economy, and social sustainability of the Northern Forest of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and the Adirondacks. This case study, cartographic, and statistical analysis uncovered a variety of growth management, land use, and preservation opportunities and weaknesses.

• Dan Moscovici presented a paper at the Association of Environmental Studies and Sciences (AESS) in Madison, Wisconsin. The paper sought to focus on the field study, or short-term study abroad, as a model to develop greater understanding of sustainability through an interdisciplinary platform. These types of courses benefit not only the student, but also the professors, the universities, local partners, and local residents.

• Kevin Egan co-presented a paper at the annual International Studies Association meeting in New York, NY. This paper examined the evolution in the concepts of power at work in contemporary warfare through a Foucauldian reading of the Army’s most recent field training manual. In doing so, it explored issues of insurgency and counter-insurgency, as well as newly deployed tactics meant to protect and promote the well-being of populations caught up in conflict.

• Kevin Egan presented a poster derived from research he conducted during his dissertation at the annual American Political Science Association meeting in Boston, MA. The focus was on the ways in which bodies – both the individual body and the body politic – are being transformed by contemporary phenomena, including biotechnologies, sexual categorizations, and immigration. The goal, argued for in the poster, is to seek a less unified and more fluid, pluralistic conception of bodies situated in post-modern politics.
