BS Civil Engineering '22, Honors

Drexel Faculty Mentor: Xu Xiao

"I am a driven Civil Engineering student with a particular interest in green infrastructure and mass transit. I am pursuing a Computer Science minor, an accelerated BS/MS Degree Program, and a Singapore Exchange Program while utilizing Drexel's Five Year Co-op Plan to gain 18 months of work experience. I entered Drexel as a part of the Honors Learning Living Community and further involved myself at Drexel by joining the Drexel Nanomaterials Group helping synthesize 2D carbides and nitrides. With the assistance of the Freeman-ASIA Award, I will be studying abroad at Nanyang Technological University in the fall of 2018. I am excited to explore Southeast Asian culture while expanding my knowledge of green energy and mass transit. Singapore is home of one of the most extensive and efficient city transit systems in the world, the MRT, and invests in innovative, eco-friendly construction. I hope to bring home a fresh perspective on how civil engineers can approach the future of city planning.

Upon returning to Drexel, I will also work with Drexel’s LGBTQ+ social student organization and NTU’s equivalent LGBTQ+ presence, Kaleidoscope, to show Drexel students that while some places in Asia are more culturally traditional, study in the region is both possible and fun. During my involvement in Kaleidoscope, I hope to better understand the complex practical reality of a Singapore that is progressing yet rooted in tradition.  By sharing my experience and correcting misconceptions, I hope to show LGBTQ students that Asia can be a safe and inviting destination."
