HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Research Fellows Program aims to strengthen and expand the nation's pool of physician-scientists, dentist-scientists, and veterinarian-scientists. More than 1,400 students have participated in the program, which allows students to choose their own mentor; develop a basic, translational, or applied research project; and conduct full-time research.

HHMI provides a year of full-time, mentored laboratory research training to medical, dental, and veterinary students, during which fellows conduct research at an academic or nonprofit institution in the US (excluding NIH or other government agencies) or at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA. There are special requirements for the Med Fellows Program at Janelia, including a prescreening application deadline in early November.

Students must be in good standing at a medical, dental, or veterinary school in the United States. These fellowships are not available to students enrolled in a combined medical, dental, or veterinary/Ph.D. program (e.g., M.D./ Ph.D.), a Ph.D. program, or an Sc.D. program, or to those who have completed a Ph.D. or an Sc.D. in a laboratory-based science.
