The Grounds Department at Drexel University is responsible for the maintenance of the 90+ acre University City Campus, including all campus turf, courtyards, landscape beds, seasonal flower displays and trees. We are also responsible for the daily collection of trash and recycling, policing for litter and debris, graffiti removal, and hard-surface maintenance, including the parking garage and parking lots. In the winter, Grounds is responsible for all snow and ice management to keep the campus open and as safe as possible.
Throughout the season, our landscaping operations include:
- planting and caring for trees, shrubs and seasonal flowers;
- renovating lawns;
- designing and installing new landscapes; and
- working closely with Planning, Design & Construction to align projects with the Campus Master Plan and ensure sustainable and native choices for new installations.
We compost as much of the leaves, lawn clippings and landscape debris that can be stored throughout the year and recycle them back into the campus turf and planting beds the following season. This helps reduce the amount of waste sent offsite and adds valuable organic nutrients back into the planting media, reducing the need for additional fertilizers.
In October 2016, Drexel University received an Honor Award for Excellence in Grounds Maintenance from the Professional Grounds Management Society. The Grounds Department was recognized for how it deals with the challenges of operating in an urban environment, the overall beauty of the campus grounds, and our commitment to sustainability and green practices.
Vidas Athletic Complex Maintenance
Maintaining a safe playing surface for all of Drexel's athletic teams is the No. 1 goal for the Vidas Athletic Complex. We preserve the integrity of our fields by aerating, mowing and supplying adequate irrigation, seeding, dethatching, topdressing and frequent grooming of the synthetic fields. The Grounds Department works closely with Athletics to ensure that all current NCAA rules and regulations are met and that all steps are being taken to safeguard the safety of the players, including best cleaning practices in the Vidas Field House and management of the contracted vendor to maintain all fields, synthetic or natural, to their highest level.
