Drexel Engineering Graduate Students Selected as MRS Finalists

Two Drexel Engineering graduate students, Riju Singhal and Kristy Jost, currently working to obtain their doctoral degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, have been selected as Graduate Student Award (GSA) finalists for the 2012 MRS (Materials Research Society) Fall meeting to be held November 25 - 30, 2012 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA. Each student will offer a presentation at the fall meeting with Singhal discussing his research titled, “Carbon Nanotube Based Multifunctional Probes for Intracellular Analysis and Microfluidic Separation” and Jost presenting her research on “All-textile EDLCs for Applications in Wearable Electronics.”

Both Singhal and Jost have won silver awards, which include a certificate and $200, but will be competing for gold awards consisting of a plaque and $400, as well as the newly endowed Arthur Nowick Graduate Student Award. This year’s students will be among the first under consideration for the Arthur Nowick Graduate Student Award, which honors the late Dr. Arthur Nowick and his lifelong commitment to teaching and mentoring students in materials science. This award will be presented to the GSA finalist who shows particular promise as a future teacher and mentor, and will consist of a plaque and $500. MRS is working to contact the research advisor of each student to solicit information in support of the award. Drexel’s Yury Gogotsi, distinguished university and trustee chair professor, is the research advisor for Singhal and Jost.

Drexel University has two finalists this year, matching Harvard University and Stanford University, while Cornell University leads with three. The University of Pennsylvania, Cambridge University and MIT each have one.
