College of Engineering Appoints Associate Dean of Research

Kapil DandekarJune 1, 2011 Dr. Bruce Eisenstein, Interim Dean of CoE,  named Dr. Kapil R. Dandekar, Associate Dean of Engineering for Research. Dr. Dandekar’s appointment will be effective on July 1, 2011.

Dr. Dandekar received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia with specializations in communications and signal processing, applied electrophysics and computer engineering. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1992, he worked at the U.S. Naval Observatory and from 1993-1997 and he worked at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence.

In 2001, Dr. Dandekar joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Drexel University.  He is currently an Associate Professor and Assistant Department Head for Graduate Affairs, Director of the Drexel Wireless Systems Laboratory (DWSL) and Associate Director of the A.J. Drexel Institute of Applied Communication and Information Networking (ACIN). 

DWSL has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, Army CERDEC, National Security Agency, Office of Naval Research, and private industry. Technology from his lab has been commercialized in several spin-off companies including MetaTenna, a company that seeks to provide clients with ink jet fabricated antennas for specialized wireless communications applications.

His research funding since he started at Drexel is approximately $14 million.

Dr. Dandekar’s current research interests involve antenna array-enhanced ad hoc networks, reconfigurable antennas, free space optical communications, ultrasonic communications and sensor networks. He currently serves on the editorial board of IEEE Expert Now and also serves on the Pre-University Education Coordinating Committee (PECC) of the IEEE Educational Activities Board.  As part of his work with PECC, he manages the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) in IEEE initiative to fund service learning-related research projects in IEEE student branches all around the world.
