Vision Statement
I have been working on Faculty Governance for the past three years, as an active member of Faculty Senate.  My term is complete in September 2011.  I would like to continue to serve on faculty senate for another 3 year term.  I feel that I have the experience and momentum to continue representing the College at a high level, and be a strong voice, in this time of great change, including a new President and a new Dean in College of Engineering.

Joseph P. Martin, PhD, P.E. is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE). He received his BS from Tufts University, MS from Northeastern University and PhD from Colorado State University (all Civil Engineering).  After military service, practice in infrastructure design, and service as an Instructor at CSU, Dr Martin joined the Drexel faculty in 1982.

Dr. Martin was Department Head of CAEE from 1994 to 2002, and is currently Associate Director of the Engineering Management Program. He has been advisor to the Student Chapter of the ASCE for over 20 years. He has represented Drexel Engineering on the Senate Committee on Academic Affairs for many years, and has participated in other internal and external (e.g. Sacramento initiative) activities on behalf of the College and the University. Dr Martin has been on many tenure or promotion committees as Chair or member, and on many Drexel Engineering Dept Head or Senior Faculty evaluation committees.

Dr Martin’s areas of expertise include geotechnical, environmental, transportation and infrastructure management engineering. He has supervised 11 PhD’s to completion.

In his neighborhood, Dr Martin has been active in youth activities, including Scouts, served on Haverford Township environmental committees, and has been an elected member of the Haverford Township School District since 2002.

Vision Statement
As a private institution, Drexel University “owns itself”. Therefore all vision is internally generated and advanced. Despite recent growth in both the total size of the University and its range of academic offerings, Drexel is still primarily a series of professional education programs. Career-oriented education and use-inspired research underpins our academic culture. Much of the University’s external reputation is derived from Drexel Engineering and its many successful alumni. This is no surprise, as by definition, engineering is “useful”. While the university’s reputation in particular scholarly areas is critical to the research enterprise, the public reputation is equally important to an institution that runs on a slender resource base,

The major function of a Drexel Engineering Senator in the next few years is to rebuild and advance the Drexel Engineering reputation to other Academic units and to the Administration as Drexel’s“Flagship College.” A second function is to assist the Senate in its role as a thoughtful and loyal component of shared governance, firmly representing faculty visions and views to what historically has been, in successful years, strong administrative leadership. Shared governance is necessary at Drexel to keep a “top down” organization on the path of benefit for students, faculty and the learned professional communities that we serve.
