Dr. Bruce Eisenstein Named Interim Drexel Engineering Dean
Dr. Bruce Eisenstein, Arthur J. Rowland professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and associate dean of the College of Engineering, was named Drexel Engineering interim dean. The announcement was made by Provost Mark Greenberg.
Eisenstein received his master’s degree from Drexel in 1965 and his other degrees are from MIT and the University of Pennsylvania. He served as professor and department head of ECE from 1980 to 1995 and he was appointed the Arthur J. Rowland professor of ECE in 1996. During his tenure at Drexel, he has served as associate dean of the graduate school, member of the Provost’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Priorities, the Faculty Senate Committee on Budget, Priorities and Development, the Provost’s Strategic Task Force on Enriching Undergraduate Education and he’s currently as the co-chair of the Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee.
In addition to his Drexel appointments, Eisenstein was president of the following organizations: IEEE, the largest technical/professional society in the world with nearly 400,000 members; the national ECE Department Heads’ Association (ECEDHA); and Eta Kappa Nu, the ECE Honor Society. He chaired the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for the Electrical, Communications, & Systems Engineering Directorate, and currently serves on the ABET Board of Directors. Eisenstein was elected Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year in 2000 and named a member of the “Drexel 100” in 2003.
Eisenstein succeeds Dr. Selçuk Güçeri, who resigned as Drexel Engineering dean effective June 30, 2011 and is currently on sabbatical. A search committee will be formed to find a permanent dean.
“During his decade-long deanship, Dr. Güçeri focused on recruiting exceptional faculty and students, retaining both constituencies, and providing an enhanced identity for the College as a provider of first-rate education and producer of world-class research,” said Greenberg. “On behalf of the University community, I thank him for his commitment to these principles and dedication to serving the college.”
