Senior Design Competition 2010
Drexel Engineering hosted the Senior Design Group Competition June 2, 2010 in the Mitchell Auditorium. The competition was sponsored by the Environmental Tectonics Corporation and Zodiac Aerospace. Eight groups of engineering design projects were selected as finalists to present their work during this last round with at least one group from each department. Congratulations to all teams!

Driving to the $10 Million Jackpot
Its been a long-winding road for the West Philly Hybrid X Team (EVX). For 11 years, they’ve been building and racing alternative fuel vehicles. Now, they’re in it to win. The EVX team that's partnered with Philadelphia Academies, Inc., passed the next stage of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, a $10 million competition to build the best 100 MPG vehicle.

Drexel Engineering Students Win Fulbright Scholarships
Karen Miller BS/MS (CAEE) and Kara Spiller BS/PhD (BME/CBE) have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Beginning in the fall, both students will study abroad to conduct research.

Rose Receives Drexel University Myers Award for Distinguished Service
Dorilona Rose, Operations Manager in MSE, is the recipient of the 2009-2010 Harold M. Myers Distinguished Service Award. This is the most prestigious service award presented to a faculty or staff member of the Drexel community who has gone above and beyond their position in service to the university community.

Nathan Taylor Receives ASME Public Service Award
Drexel Engineering is pleased to announce that MEM Senior and ASME President Nathan Taylor was awarded the prestigious 2010 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Charles T. Main First Place Award.

Engineering Faculty and Philadelphia Housing Authority Partner on Energy Efficient Housing
Civil, architectural and environmental engineering assistant professors Drs. Jin Wen and Patrick Gurian and four of their students are working with the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) to research technologies that are most energy efficient for PHA residences.

Drexel Engineering Celebrates National Lab Day
The College of Engineering is celebrating the kickoff of National Lab Day May 12, 2010. Drexel Engineering will be supporting NLD by building local communities that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students and educators. When an educator posts a project, the Drexel Engineering system will help them get the resources needed to make that project happen.

Y-Carbon Hires Alumnus Theodore Scabarozi as Corporate Post Doc Researcher
Y-Carbon, Inc. announced that it has received support under the Corporate Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program of the NSF and ASEE to hire alumnus Dr. Theodore Scabarozi ’09 (MSE) as a Corporate Post-Doctoral Researcher.

Alumus Jeffrey Wilcox Named as 2010 Commencement Speaker for Stevens
Drexel Engineering is pleased to announce that alumnus Jeffrey J. Wilcox ’88 (ECE), Vice President of Corporate Technology & Engineering at Lockheed Martin Corporation, will be the commencement speaker at Stevens Institute of Technology on May 27, 2010.

Friedman and Team Published in PNAS for Vascular Disease Research
A study by Dr. Gary Friedman (ECE) and his former student Dr. Ben Yellen, was published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) for their research on new medical treatment for vascular disease based on magnetically targeted drug delivery.

Micro-Supercapacitors to Power Electronic Devices
A paper in the April 23, 2010 issue of Science Magazine by Drs. Yury Gogotsi (MSE) and John Chmiola ('09, MSE) and their collaborators in France, describes a new method of producing high energy storage devices known as supercapacitors.

Engineering Cities Initiative Receives NSF RAPID Grant for Haiti Project
The Drexel Engineering Cities Initiative team has been awarded a National Science Foundation RAPID Response Grant for their project “Supporting Haitian Infrastructure Reconstruction Decisions with Local Knowledge: A Case Study Focusing on Water and Sanitation in Leogane.”

Jay Bhatt Receives the Homer Bernhardt Distinguished Service Award
Jay Bhatt, the librarian for engineering, received the Homer I. Bernhardt Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Engineering Education Engineering Libraries Division.
