Friedman and Team Published in PNAS for Vascular Disease Research

April 29, 2010 A study by Dr. Gary Friedman (ECE) and his former student Dr. Ben Yellen, was published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) for their research on new medical treatment for vascular disease based on magnetically targeted drug delivery.

This research resulted from the invention made by the Drexel team of an efficient mechanism by which drugs and other therapeutic agents can be targeted to desired sites in the body using a magnetic field. Targeted treatment of this sort minimizes side effects and in contrast to treatment with drug eluting devices, can be re-applied many times. This is the team’s second PNAS paper in two years on the general subject of magnetically targeted medical therapy. The first paper published explained using cells as a delivery vehicle. The current paper deals with delivery of a drug by nanoparticles.

The paper appeared in April 19, 2010 online Early Edition. The hardcopy will follow in one month. For more information on the researc, please visit the PNAS website.
