2009 Senior Design Competition

June 3, 2009 Drexel Engineering held its 2009 Senior Design Competition June 3, 2009 in the Mitchell Auditorium. All graduating CoE students are required to complete a Senior Design project, teaching students the engineering design process from conception to production. Eight teams competed for first place but Dr. Steven Weber’s team took the grand prize with their ‘schdulr’ system. Dr. Selçuk Güçeri, Dean of Drexel’s Drexel Engineering, presented the teams with over $3,500.00 in prizes. Congratulations to the Drexel Engineering Senior Design teams!

1ST PLACE TEAM - $2,000
Project Representing Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering
Comprehensive Web-Based Course Management and Scheduling System
The ECE team designed an application called ‘schdulr’, which is a web-based course scheduling application that provides students with a unified interface to plan out their course of study at college and register for classes.

2ND PLACE TEAM - $1,000
Project Representing Department of Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics
Design and Construction of the Drexel FSAE Formula Hybrid Car
The hybrid car team design, fabricated, tested, and raced an open-wheel Formula Hybrid SAE car. The car utilized a series drive train incorporating a motorcycle engine – electric motor pair for power generation, ultracapacitors for energy storage, and independent electric motor drive for the rear wheels.

3RD PLACE TEAM - $500

Vine Street Expressway - Urban Renewal & Rehabilitation
On December 27th, 2005, an adjacent box girder bridge along PA State Road 1014 collapsed under its own weight. Since then, the state government has mandated that adjacent box girder bridges, with characteristics similar to the one that fell on PA 1014, are to be replaced. Between Broad Street and the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia seven adjacent box girder bridges of this type cross the Vine Street Expressway. Per the state mandate, all of these bridges must be replaced. In response to the mandate, the purpose of this Senior Design Project was to design replacements for these seven bridges.
