Drexel Materials third year student Nhat (Nate) Nguyen has been awarded a 2023 DAAD Research Internships in Science & Engineering (RISE) summer internship to conduct research at Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany.

The DAAD RISE program offers North American, British and Irish undergraduate students the opportunity to complete summer research internships at top German universities and research institutions through funding from the German Federal Foreign Office. Participating students receive a monthly stipend for three months to conduct research in their area of interest.

This summer internship will constitute the second half of Nate’s 2022-23 six-month co-op. For the first half, he is currently conducting research in Associate Professor Hao Cheng’s Nanobiomaterials and Cell Engineering Laboratory. This arrangement is supported through the Research Fellowship Supplement Program, a pilot program offered by the Pennoni Honors College Undergraduate Research & Enrichment Programs (UREP) and the Steinbright Career Development Center to enable students interested in RISE for co-op credit to combine the experience with a funded on-campus research co-op. In Cheng’s lab, Nate is exploring the potential for alginate, a natural bio-compatible polymer, to serve as a drug delivery particle. He will continue to explore the use of bio-compatible polymers for drug delivery while at Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

Information about applying to the DAAD RISE program is available to Drexel students through the UREP Fellowships site.
