Goldwater Scholarship Awarded to Undergraduate Researcher Marley Downes

Marley Downes

Marley Downes, BS/MS materials science and engineering ’24, has been named a 2023 Barry Goldwater Scholar.

The Goldwater scholarship program, which honors Senator Barry Goldwater, was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

Supported by her mentors, Chris Shuck, PhD, assistant research professor; Yury Gogotsi, PhD, Distinguished University and Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor; and PhD candidate Mark Anayee, Downes is a research assistant in the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute. Her research focus is the synthesis and characterization of new MXenes. She recently attended and presented her work “M5X4: A Family of MXenes” at the TMS Spring Meeting.

After finishing her undergraduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University, Downes will work toward a PhD in materials science with a focus on nanomaterials for environmentally friendly energy sources. She also intends to teach at the University level.
