Drexel’s chapter of Tau Beta Pi (TBP), the national engineering honor
society, was recently rewarded the organization’s Chapter Excellence
Award with Distinction for 2021-22. The chapter accepted the award at
the national TBP conference on September 30.
The award is given to a chapter for outstanding member engagement,
headquarters reporting, and chapter operations.
“This is a significant and recognizable achievement for our chapter as
it reflects the hard work, time, and dedication our executive board and
members have put in over the past few semesters to make our chapter
stand out,” said Anupam Mishra, MS mechanical engineering ’24. “This is
particularly significant as we were received this award at the first
in-person convention since the COVID. It shows how well our chapter has
been able to bounce back from the pandemic despite the numerous
challenges associated with initiating members and fostering involvement
in chapter activities and events.”
To qualify for membership in TBP, an undergraduate engineering student
must be ranked in the top eighth of the junior class or top fifth of
the senior class. A graduate engineering student must have completed
more than 50 percent of their coursework (including research) and must
obtain a letter of recommendation from their advisor to qualify.
The chapter’s signature social event is Pi Day, where each year on or
around March 14, members and non-members alike are invited to enjoy pie
and pe in various activities like scavenger hunts and trivia. The group
also volunteers at local K-12 schools to increase interest in STEM
subjects.
“This term, we are hoping to collaborate with other student-run
organizations at Drexel and set up professional development sessions
for resume building, interview practices and more,” Mishra said. “We
have plenty of new ideas on making activities fun and resourceful for
our members and we're looking forward to act on them.”
