Drexel’s College of Engineering is sponsoring a pop-up “Starliner” mission patch design contest open to all Drexel undergraduates and graduate students. The prize is a $100 gift card and the opportunity to send the design into space with the inaugural flight of the Boeing CST-100 Starliner. CoE alumnus Capt. Chris Ferguson (MEM ’84) will be aboard the Starliner, the first crewed spaceship to leave US soil in nearly a decade.
The Starliner will dock at the International Space Station for a long-duration mission. The maiden flight is tentatively scheduled for November 2019.
This is the second time a mission patch from Drexel will go into low-Earth orbit with Ferguson. A patch was designed by Drexel students back in 2011 to accompany the final flight of the US space shuttle program, under Ferguson’s command.
The contest is of short duration: students must submit their design entries by Friday, May 31. The winning design will be selected by CoE Dean Sharon L. Walker, PhD, in consult with Boeing.
Here are the contest rules:
- ELIGIBILITY: Open to all undergraduate and graduate students of Drexel University.
- ORIGINALS ONLY: All entries must be original and created by the submitting student(s).
- OWNERSHIP: All entries become the property of the college.
- PROMOTION PERIOD: All design entries are due to the College of Engineering by 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 5. Preferred file format is eps; otherwise, send a jpg or png file format to Pop-up Contest at: coe.news@drexel.edu
- CONTESTANTS:

- The final design is subject to selection by Dean Sharon Walker and review by Boeing. Winner(s) will be notified Tues., June 11. The winning designer will be publicized on the college’s news feed and social media channels.
