A Drexel Materials alumnus, a staff member, and a student were all honored at Drexel University’s Alumni Board of Governors annual awards ceremony.

Dr. Charles Yang (MS ’97, PhD ’01) received the Service to the Profession Award. Currently Director and Department Head of Small Molecule Pharmaceutics at Genentech, Yang previously held positions at Merck and Amgen. Yang joins previous Drexel Materials award winners Dr. Frederick Schmidt (BS ’68, MS ’70, PhD ’95) and George Vander Voort (BS ’67) in receiving the honor.

Sarit Kunz, assistant director of student services, was honored with the Faculty/Staff Award for Campus Impact. Kunz received her BS from Drexel in hotel and restaurant management in 2000 and has worked with Drexel Materials since 2011. Sarit was honored for her work as a tireless student advocate.

PhD student Mallory Clites (advisor: Ekaterina Pomerantseva) received the Outstanding Student Award. Mallory’s research in the Materials Electrochemistry Group focuses on the development of a chemical pre-intercalation method which can be used to synthesize layered oxide materials pre-inserted with inorganic ions and/or organic molecules. She was a recipient of the DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (Department of Energy SCGSR) Program Fellowship, which allowed her to conduct research at Oak Ridge National Lab. Mallory has been an active volunteer and leader for numerous departmental outreach activities. She is the fourth Drexel Materials student to receive this honor.

These award winners represented three of four College of Engineering honorees out of 10 total people honored at the awards ceremony during Drexel’s Homecoming weekend on January 19, 2019 at the Study Hotel.
