Dr. Ciira Maina, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri, Kenya, delivered the plenary at the inaugural Black in AI workshop, as part of this year’s NIPS (Neural Information Processing Systems) conference, arguably the most influential machine learning conference. “Black in AI is a place for sharing ideas, fostering collaborations, and discussing initiatives to increase the presence of Black people in the field of Artificial Intelligence,” according to the organization’s official website.
Dr. Maina graduated with his Ph.D. from Drexel in 2011 and was advised by Electrical & Computer Engineering Associate Professor Dr. John Walsh.
