Construction Management Faculty and Student Recognized for Achievements

Professor Douglas Carney was awarded the 2018 ACE Mentor Program of Eastern Pennsylvania’s Person of the Year award. Professor Carney is a part-time faculty member in the Construction Management program and the Senior Vice President of Facilities for Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania.  Professor Carney has specialized in developing and provided strategic leadership for highly effective cross functional teams in capital projects, facilities operations, and real estate environments in large institutional settings and has taught continuously in the Construction Management Program since 2003.

He has practiced as an architect for over 36 years with extensive project experience with contract management, site analysis, master planning, feasibility & zoning studies, space needs & program development, as well as project scheduling; all experiences he shares with our students.

Founded in 2000, the ACE Mentor Program of Eastern Pennsylvania gives students from local high schools an exciting opportunity to learn more about potential careers in architecture, engineering and construction. Drexel’s Construction Management Program sponsors an ACE team and Professor Carney was an active mentor to the group each week, sharing his construction and architecture knowledge with the students.

Dr. Christine Fiori was awarded the Drexel University 2018 Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award. This award is presented to a recognized student organization advisor who has served as an outstanding mentor, impacting the growth and development of student leaders and organization members. Dr. Fiori was nominated by the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity for her continued support and dedication to the personal development of the brothers. As an advisor and mentor she has presented workshops on topics such as leadership development, conflict, stress and time management and scuba diving as well as leading weekly discussions surrounding topics and books chosen by the brothers. She has served as an advisor since 2015.

Katie Tiarks a sophomore Construction Management student was awarded the 2018 Drexel University Alana Maddox Student Friendship Award. This award is dedicated to the memory of Alana Maddox, a committed and active Drexel student who was a friend to all and is presented to a Drexel undergraduate student who exemplifies the true meaning of being a "good friend" by lifting spirits, providing optimism, and inspiring people around them. Katie was nominated by two of her piers for her support of their efforts in challenging times. Maddie Pelchat spoke of how Katie helped her cope with the death of her aunt, while Tom Abbruzzese spoke of her positive attitude and support with his push up challenge.
