Charles N. Haas
Dr. Charles Haas, LD Betz Professor of Environmental Engineering and Department Head, has been selected as the recipient of the 2018 A.P. Black Research Award from the American Water Works Association (AWWA). The A.P. Black Research Award, established in 1967 in honor of Alvin Percy Black, is given on an as-deserved basis to recognize a researcher for outstanding research contributions to water science and water supply rendered over an appreciable period of time.
The citation approved by the AWWA Board of Directors at its 2018 winter meeting reads as follows:
"For more than 40 years, Professor Charles N. Haas has applied his environmental engineering discipline to public health protection at a time when the US EPA was establishing environmental regulations and the nation needed sound, science-based research.
Dr. Haas has demonstrated the qualities of a leader in water research and for over three decades has developed students for careers in the water science field. Trained as a microbiologist and environmental engineer, he has been able to bring mathematics into the world of biology. He has studied disinfection, recalcitrant organisms, kinetics, and novel assessment for treatment reliability. His role in the development of QMRA has provided a framework and data that has significantly promoted water safety."
In recognition of this honor, an award will be presented to Dr. Haas during the Opening General Session on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at ACE18 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
