ECE's own Dr. Gail Rosen, Associate Professor, and Stephen Woloszynek, a Ph.D. advised by Dr. Rosen, are co-authors on a review paper recently published in the April 2018 Royal Society journal Interface. The review paper, titled "Opportunities and obstacles for deep learning in biology and medicine," addresses groundbreaking work in deep learning in medicine and biology.
"Deep learning" is a field within machine learning. From their abstract, "deep learning algorithms...are capable of combining raw inputs into layers of intermediate features;"1 advances in deep learning tools, as addressed in the paper, can be utilized to further medical and biological research.
The paper can be accessed online here.
Also, Jeffrey Perkel of Nature posted an interesting story on how the paper came together through the collaboration of 40 different authors.
