A new student chapter of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) will have its first general body meeting on September 29 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Hill Conference Room, LeBow Engineering Center room 240. BS/MS Architectural Engineering student, Kerry Milligan, will serve as the treasurer of the chapter.
It was an ASEE conference that initially piqued her interest in gaining a better understanding of how engineers learn engineering. “Being involved on the education side of things made me a better student,” says Kerry. According to the ASEE official website, ASEE is defined as a “nonprofit organization of individuals and institutions committed to furthering education in engineering and engineering technology.” Kerry gained a better understanding of learning styles and techniques at the conference that encouraged her to present a poster at another ASEE conference and submit a paper to the Frontier in Education (FIE) organization. She decided to join the Drexel student chapter of ASEE in an officer’s role to help get the chapter established soon after.
The biggest goal of the Drexel ASEE student chapter is to become involved with K-12 outreach working on events involving reading books to young children, tutoring children in STEM subjects, and doing hands-on demos at regional events like the Philadelphia Science Festival. “We would like to pair with DragonsTeach for outreach” says Kerry. In addition, the group hopes to develop panel discussions and “Lunch & Learn” sessions focusing on topics that combine engineering with education.
The ASEE student chapter is accepting new members and is open to all STEM majors. For more information about Drexel’s ASEE student chapter, please click here.
