Freshman teams “Sir Care-A-Lot” (Section 68, Group 3) and “Hydro-electric Generator with Water Filter” (Section 72, Group 4) won the Faculty Choice and Student Choice 2016 Freshman Awards, respectively.
“Sir Cares-A-Lot: A Therapeutic Stuffed Animal for Autistic Children,” was presented by students Alexander Carlson, Breanna Hempel, Stephanie Henninger, Aida Kupa and Sona Mathew and received the 2016 Faculty Choice Award. The project involved creating a therapeutic stuffed animal, Sir Cares-A- Lot, that provides support to a child that is having trouble coping with their emotions and sensory overload. It is equipped with components that are geared towards children with autism.
Dr. Moses Noh, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, and Marco Janko, Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering were the team's advisors.
“Hydro-electric Generator with Water Filter,” was presented by students Kirtan Patel, John R. Seitz IV, Zhengxuan Wu and Yumeng Yang and received the 2016 Student Choice Award. The goal of the project was to develop a single device that can generate electricity while filtering contaminated water at a low cost. If the device proves to be successful enough, it can be manufactured on a larger scale and potentially help the lives of millions throughout the world by offering clean water and electricity simultaneously.
