College of Engineering Dean Joseph Hughes presented the keynote address at the 2015 Clarke Prize Conference and Award Ceremony in Los Angeles, Ca. The conference, a unique event in the water industry, invited leading experts to discuss the most innovative research and technology occurring in urban water sustainability. Dean Hughes spoke on the topic of “Water in the Developing World.”
This year’s award winner, who was nominated by Dean Hughes, was John C. Crittenden, Ph.D., and Director of the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems at Georgia Institute of Technology. The Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize is awarded each year to an outstanding individual in the U.S. who has implemented better water science research and/or policy development to solve real-world water challenges. Crittenden, an environmental engineer whose career has spanned 37 years, has been a pioneer in the research and development of water treatment technologies, particularly physical-chemical treatment processes.
