Michael Waring, PhD was recently featured on WHYY/Newsworks discussing his recent research regarding the atmospheric chemical reactions that take place when using cleaning products and air fresheners indoors. Two common ingredients in household cleaners, α-terpineol (pine scent) and d-limonene (orange smell) are both naturally occurring, and individually they are harmless. However, when these ingredients react with ozone, they produce a suite of oxygenated compounds that tend to form particulate matter, a type of pollution, in the indoor air. Dr. Waring and his Indoor Environment Research Group have been studying these effects. A link to the Newsworks article as well as an audio recording can be found here.
