Bruce Eisenstein, Ph.D., Vice Dean of the College of Engineering and Arthur J. Rowland Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been inducted into the IEEE Technical Activities Board Hall of Honor.
Dr. Eisenstein has a long and impressive history with IEEE Technical Activities (TA) during which time, he has been committed to its mission and has made noteworthy contributions. He was a member of its Board of Directors from 1993 to 2001, during which time he served as Vice President (1995, 1996) and President (2000). He has also contributed his time and expertise to many IEEE committees, including Education Activities (10 years), Finance (4 years), and Investment (2 years) among others.
Dr. Eisenstein was initially nominated for induction into the Hall of Honor as a result of three initiatives he spear-headed. The first was to introduce an election process for the position of Vice President, Technical Activities by IEEE Society members. Up until that time, the position had been appointed by the IEEE Assembly, a subset of the Board of Directors. The change resulted in improved member representation for this important governing position.
Dr. Eisenstein also significantly improved the procedure for accurate, transparent financial reporting of IEEE society reserves. The procedure established reserve accounts for TA societies that allowed them access to their funds and assured the long-term financial health of IEEE.
Finally, recognizing the need for time-sensitive issues to be addressed on an on-going basis, Dr. Eisenstein established the Technical Activities Board Management Council. The Council provides the opportunity for important issues to be reviewed, analyzed and pre-processed between meetings which ultimately assures more productive discussion and informed decision-making.
IEEE is a professional association whose mission is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE Technical Activities specifically addresses the facilitation of exchange of scientific and technological knowledge among members. The Hall of Honor provides an opportunity for members to recognize the distinguished achievements of their IEEE colleagues, recognizing those persons who have made one or more significant contribution(s) that create, develop or advance the technical objectives of IEEE Technical Activities.
