The 25th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 1 Competition was held mid-November in Morristown, NJ with Drexel University students competing. The ASC Northeast Region is comprised of the colleges and universities that offer four-year construction engineering and management degrees in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. Drexel Engineering’s Construction Management department again entered teams in the Heavy Construction (HC) and Commercial Building Construction (CBC) divisions.
In Drexel’s 7th year of competing, the HC team won 1st place in a field of 11 schools, and the CBC Team placed 2nd out of a field of 15. Drexel landed the highest combined team scores at the competition, holding the 1st place and 2nd place positions. Roger Williams University, located in Bristol, Rhode Island, came in 2nd with a combined score of a 1st place position and a 3rd place position. Drexel’s HC Team, in particular, blew the competition out of the water with almost a full 10-point lead.
Drexel begins the competition season at a disadvantage since the university’s fall term starts in late September, while all of the other schools typically begin in late August. This translates into a one-and-a-half versus two-and-a-half month face-to-face preparation time. However, Drexel routinely compensates for this disadvantage by leveraging the "Drexel Advantage," specifically excellent students in a strong and hands-on academic program, underpinned by cooperative education.
Both teams first met while participating in Rebuilding Together Philadelphia’s (RTP) Mantua Block Build in May during which the teams began to coalesce. The HC Team consisted of juniors: Jason DeMatt, Fred Langezaal, Elizabeth Passmore; and pre-juniors: Zach Heissler, Samuel Masters, and Sean Smith. The CBC Team was comprised of seniors: George Kamaratos and Denise Tankle; juniors Max Feldscher and Chris Neal; and pre-junior David Senko. Dr. Robert Muir, assistant professor and construction management program director, acted as the coach for the HC team. The CBC Team received guidance and support from Professor Edward Keeter and Professor Doug Carney.
The students who competed exemplified professionalism, dedication, determination, and teamwork. “The excellent performance of the Drexel ASC teams further validates the high quality of the construction management program and of our outstanding students. The teams’ performances add to the stellar reputation of Drexel’s College of Engineering,” said Robert Muir after the victory. Both teams represented the university in the finest fashion.
