Congratuations to Dr. Cameron Abrams for receiving the College of Engineering Excellence in Research Award for 2014. His time, commitment and passion in research is evidenced in the outstanding research he does every day.
Dr. Cameron Abrams of the Chemical and Biological Engineering department has had a prolific and rich research career since his appointment. He uses first-principles approaches to examine fundamental and applied problems in both biology and engineering. The last 12 months first brought him international recognition for his AIDS research. His special ability to examine lubrication phenomena from a molecular perspective has brought him major new industrial recognition and funding. Specific details on these notable achievements are:
- Together with Irwin Chaiken, designed DAVEI, a molecule that selectively destroys the AIDS virus on contact
- Received press coverage for AIDS research in the Economist and the Drexel alumni magazine, among other venues and was published in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in late 2013
- Received a sponsored research agreement (SRA) with ExxonMobil Research and Engineering for studying the self-assembly of thickener molecules into mesoscopic structures that correlate with optimal lubricity
