Faculty and Staff Awards

A number of faculty and staff awards are currently available for nomination:

Barbara G. Hornum Award for Teaching Excellence, 2013-2014

Deadline for Submissions: March 28, 2014


The Office of the Provost invites nominations for the Barbara G. Hornum Award for Teaching Excellence. This award is given yearly to a teaching faculty member with at least a minimum of three (3) years of full-time teaching at Drexel University, and teaching must cover at least 90% of the individual’s contractual responsibilities. Candidates should provide the following documentation:

a.    Syllabi for all courses taught, teaching evaluations from one term, student letters, and supporting letters from colleagues and the candidate’s Department Head.

b.    A concise statement of teaching philosophy and methodology.

The recipient of this award will receive a certificate acknowledging teaching excellence and a monetary award of $2,000. The award will be presented at the Faculty Recognition Dinner held in the Spring quarter, and the recipient will also be recognized at Commencement.

Lindback Distinguished Teaching Awards, 2013-2014

The Office of the Provost invites nominations for the 2013-14 Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. Two awards will be presented to Drexel University faculty.

Excellence in teaching activities is the primary criterion by which the candidates will be judged. All full-time tenure track and tenured faculty are eligible, with the exception of past recipients of the award. Also eligible are faculty who have demonstrated their commitment to excellence in teaching at Drexel University and who have carried a full-time teaching load for at least three years prior to the year of nomination. Students initiating nominations should work through the candidate’s Department Head.

The Committee’s evaluations will be based upon the documentation provided on all aspects of teaching. The documentation must include:

1.    A copy of the candidate’s curriculum vitae.

2.    A statement written by the candidate, limited to 500 words, describing his/her teaching theory and/or practice. Such a statement could include references to persons and events that have influenced or shaped the candidate’s teaching practice, as well as goals, principles and methods that can assist the Committee in understanding the candidate’s teaching practice and views.

3.    Copies of syllabi from three to four courses the candidate has taught in the last five academic years. Please indicate if the candidate developed any of these courses. If a course has been taught more than once, indicate any evolution of course syllabi over time.

4.    Copies of three to five teaching resources used in class: handouts, assignments, examinations, multimedia presentations, or computer-aided teaching materials are examples.

5.    A summary table of all the courses the candidate has taught for the last three years (including course title, level, and numbers of students), copies of course evaluation forms from three to four courses, and summaries of teaching evaluation scores, with comparisons to evaluations within the College or School, if available. If copies of actual student course evaluations are to be included, this should be limited to a single course.

6.    A brief summary of any education grants awarded and/or teaching-related presentations/publications.

7.    Letters of support from candidate’s Dean/Director, Department Head, colleagues and particularly students. No letter of support should be more than five years old. Other evidence of excellence in teaching should be included.

The main text should assume the form of a dossier or “teaching portfolio” not to exceed 25 pages. Additional items to be included in appendices may include syllabi, specialized teaching materials (e.g., videotapes, CDs, DVDs, etc.), and the requested letters of support. All materials will be held in confidence.

The Lindback Award recipients will each receive a certificate of acknowledgment and a monetary award of $4,000. The awards will be presented at the Faculty Recognition Dinner held in the Spring quarter, and the recipients will also be recognized at Commencement.

Allen Rothwarf Award for Teaching Excellence, 2013-2014

The Office of the Provost invites nominations for the Allen Rothwarf Award for Teaching Excellence. This award is given yearly to a tenure-track junior faculty member with at least two years of service at Drexel University. Additionally, at least half of the candidate's teaching must be at the undergraduate level. Candidates should provide the following documentation:

a.    A comprehensive dossier, teaching portfolio, course syllabi, student evaluations from one term, peer reviews and recommendations.

b.    Materials should demonstrate innovation and a commitment to pedagogical excellence.

The recipient of this award will receive a certificate acknowledging teaching excellence and a monetary award of $2,000. The award will be presented at the Faculty Recognition Dinner held in the Spring quarter, and the recipient will also be recognized at Commencement.

Harold M. Myers Distinguished Service Award, 2013-2014

The Office of the Provost invites nominations for this year's Harold M. Myers Distinguished Service Award. The Harold M. Myers Distinguished Service Award should be regarded by the entire community as parallel to other awards given for service, teaching and research.

The Recipient

1.    Must be an administrator, administrative staff person, full-time or part-time faculty member.

2.    Must have performed service above and beyond normal expectations of their position.

3.    Must have engaged in service work on one or more occasions that has been recognized as truly significant in the life of the University.

4.    Must have been a contributor to the work of the University and its mission.

The recipient of this award will receive a certificate of acknowledgement and a monetary award of $2,000. The award will be presented at the Faculty Recognition Dinner held in the Spring quarter, and the recipient will also be recognized at Commencement.

Procedure

1.    Nominations should include a nominating letter addressing criteria 2, 3, and 4 above, three to six supporting letters from individuals knowledgeable about the candidate’s activities, and a current vitae or resume, as appropriate. All nominations should be advanced through the individual’s supervisor, department head, dean or vice president.
