Advancing Drexel’s commitment to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, the College of Engineering will host Science and Technology Series: Engineering in the Community on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in various locations throughout the college including the Bossone Research Center, Woodring labs and more. The day includes specially-designed presentations, demonstrations and interactive workshops in which faculty, staff and students will share their research and experience.
This program, aimed at students in seventh through tenth grades, looks at non-traditional applications of engineering that aim to fill a societal need and help an underserved or disadvantaged population. Using the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges for Engineering as a guide, the focus areas of this program include topics such as urban infrastructure improvements, access to clean air and water, disaster relief and management of natural disasters, cyber security, and assistive technologies, all of which fall under the umbrella of humanitarian need. For part of the day, adults may explore the theme of the program in separate, concurrent sessions specifically designed for parents. Families will then reconnect for lunch and again at the conclusion of the program to share their experiences from the day's activities. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
