Drexel University will play a key role in the national celebration of engineers that is annual Drexel’s Engineers Week. The week, which runs from February 18-22, will bring engineer enthusiasts together for a week of engineering-related activities and gatherings throughout the campus and city to raise public awareness of engineers’ indispensable contributions to society. Drexel students, faculty, professional staff, alumni and industry partners will take part in events each day with the themes of the week focusing on energy, the environment, community engagement and diversity in engineering. Below is a schedule of all Drexel-related activities during the week:
Monday, February 18
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.) – Drexel’s Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street, between 31st and 32nd Streets) will be home to more than 100 high school students and Junior Girl Scouts that will participate in interactive engineering lessons and hands-on demonstrations integrating the arts and engineering.
Garrett Morgan Career Fair (9:00 a.m. – 2 p.m.) – Drexel’s Behrakis Grand Hall (Chestnut Street, between 31st and 32nd Streets) will serve as the venue for up to 200 minority high school and college students as well as recent college graduates who will be afforded networking and interviewing opportunities with some of our area's top transportation focused consultant firms and authorities.
Jeopardy! Drexel Engineering Faculty Edition (6 p.m.) – Faculty will square off in a battle of wits to answer freshmen engineering and general knowledge questions in a Jeopardy-style competition. The competition will be open to the public in Drexel’s Mitchell Auditorium (Market Street, between 31st and 32nd Streets).
College of Engineering Alumni Association Night at Men's Basketball (6:30 p.m. Pre-game Reception, 7 p.m. Tip-off) – Kick off Engineers Week with the College of Engineering Alumni Association as the Drexel Dragons take on Hofstra University in the Daskalakis Athletic Center (3315 Market Street). Tuesday, February 19
Engineering Career Fair (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.) – Drexel’s College of Engineering and the Steinbright Career Development Center will host a career fair with more than 90 companies in the Drexel Recreation Center to present students and Drexel engineering alumni with career opportunities.
Alumni Connections Program (3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.) – Successful engineering alumni, ranging from young to seasoned, will participate in a panel discussion in the Bossone Atrium. Panelists will provide students and alumni with free career advice, tips on how to excel in the field and ways to transition to the next level in your career. Panelists will also provide insight on which career is for you. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session after the panel discussion. Following the discussion, students and alumni will have the opportunity to network with the panelists at a reception in the Bossone Atrium (Market Street, between 31st and 32nd Streets). Engineering Quizzo (8 p.m. – 10 p.m.) – Drexel Engineering’s student organizations will be hosting a night of trivia fun with questions based on energy, the environment, sustainability and diversity in engineering at Landmark Americana Tap and Grill (3333 Market Street).
Wednesday, February 20
Egg Drop Competition (10 a.m.) – Students and faculty will compete to see whose eggs will survive a 28 foot drop into a landing zone. All students, faculty, alumni and professional staff are welcome to enter and attend the event led by engineering student organizations in the Bossone Research Enterprise Center third floor atrium.
Systems Thinking: The Critical Skill for Effective Leaders and Managers (12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) – Attend this free webinar hosted by Drexel’s Engineering Management Program to learn how you can become a leader by developing systems thinking skills. This interactive presentation and Q&A Session is designed to enhance the awareness of a wide range of principles and mental models related to sustainable high performance in today’s dynamic and complex environment. Video Game Night (6 p.m. – 10 p.m.) – Students are invited to battle in a night of console gaming and board games in the newly opened ExCITe Center (3401 Market Street). The evening will begin with a brief presentation on Gaming provided by the Drexel Computer Science Department. Following the presentation, games will be played on PlayStation 3, Xbox and Wii and participants can enjoy snacks and conversation with the evening full of gaming entertainment. The event will feature games including Halo 4, Super Smash Brothers, Artemis, Street Fighter 4 and more.
Thursday, February 21
MegaBad Movie Night (6:30 p.m. – 10 p.m.) Join the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University for a special Engineers Week edition of Mega-Bad Movie Night. Watch an “awesomely awful” movie - The Core - right in Drexel’s Mitchell Auditorium. The Academy's experts and a Drexel engineer will be onstage to comment on the movie’s many scientific absurdities—think Mystery Science Theater 3000! The special edition of Mega-Bad Movie Night includes drinks and snacks courtesy of Drexel’s Engineers Week. You'll also see a sampling of the Academy's specimens and live animals. Friday, February 22
Engineering Leader of the Year Dinner and Award Ceremony (5 p.m. – 9 p.m.) As the capstone event for the week, the College of Engineering will honor 2013 Engineering Leader of the Year, Dr. Linda Abriola, dean of engineering at Tufts University and a Drexel alumna of civil engineering. Abriola will be honored for her outstanding leadership in Environmental Engineering, her commitment to the National Academy of Engineering and her contributions to engineering in an effort to improve today’s societal problems at the Rittenhouse Hotel in a dinner and ceremony.
