Sophomore Veronika Legkobitova was selected, from among more than 800 applicants, to present her Star research project, “Effect of Foramen Magnum on Traumatic Brain Injury Prediction” to members of Congress during the 2013 Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) Posters on the Hill on April 23 and 24.
Each year the Council on Undergraduate research selects approximately 60 undergraduate students from across the U.S. who participate in high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship to present their work to Congress and federal funding agencies. The purpose of Posters on the Hill is to help members of Congress understand the importance of undergraduate research by talking directly with the students whom these programs impact.
The two day event features several student presentation sessions, a luncheon panel and poster session for arts and humanities students, and an evening poster session and reception for science and social sciences students. CUR will invite representatives from federal funding agencies and nearby foundations to attend the poster session.
Legkobitova conducted her research under the mentorship of Dr. Sriram Balasubramanian, assistant professor in the School of BioMedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems and Dr. Matthew Maltese at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Legkobitova is studying Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics and is a member of the Penonni Honors Program and the Drexel chapter of ASME.
The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) was founded in 1978 by a group of chemists from private liberal arts colleges who wanted to provide information about research conducted at liberal arts colleges by faculty, often in collaboration with students. Since then, the CUR has grown to include all disciplines and all types of institutions. Today, members include nearly 7000 individuals and over 600 colleges and universities.
