Digital Building Concentration to be Added to Architectural Engineering Major

The Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering department will be adding a new concentration to the Bachelors of Science program in Architectural Engineering. This new concentration, Digital Building, will complement the program’s existing Mechanical and Structural concentrations.

The Architectural Engineering (AE) major prepares students for professional work in the analysis, design, construction and operation of all types of buildings – residential, commercial, institutional and industrial.  The concentrations within this major are intended to provide students with a strong skill-set and sound understanding of the latest technological advances in AE.

“I am very excited to introduce this new concentration into Drexel’s Architectural Engineering program,” said James Mitchell, director of the architectural engineering program. “Adding the Digital Building concentration to our already successful Mechanical and Structural concentrations will further advance our program and provide more comprehensive real-world preparation for our students.”

The new Digital Building concentration will provide an integrated yet streamlined area of study for students who wish to focus on digital modeling tools as they pertain to applications throughout a building’s life cycle. The use of digital modeling tools has increased dramatically in recent years and the addition of this new concentration will provide students with comprehensive instruction on how to successfully use Building Information Modeling (BIM) programs such as Autodesk’s Revit. Students will also be prepared for use of these tools as construction managers and as owner’s representatives.

Core courses for AE majors will stay the same and the Digital Building concentration will introduce seven courses that students will be required to take in their junior and senior years.  These courses are geared towards providing students with the specialized skills appropriate for career development.

These seven courses are:
•    CivE-370 – Introduction to Structural Analysis
•    CivE-371,2 – Introduction to Structural Design
•    Info-210 – Database Management Systems
•    Info-New – Networks and Systems Analysis
•    CMGT-467 – Techniques of Project Control
•    AE-510 - Intelligent Buildings
•    CMGT-361 – Contracts and Specs

The Digital Building concentration will be formally introduced into the curriculum beginning in the Fall term of the 2014-15 academic year. More information regarding this concentration will be posted on the Drexel University Course Catalog
