Drexel’s engineering students have accelerated to the next stage of the competition by completing a racecar for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Sixth Annual Formula Hybrid International Competition running until May 3 at the Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H. On Monday, the team received their first two qualification stickers that represent approval for the charger and preliminary electrical components of the car. Today the team will encounter another technical inspection in hopes of getting a final green light to race.
DrexElectric is one of 39 registered teams this year and will race as car #35. The team consists of both Formula Hybrid club members and students, under the advisory of Dr. Kevin Scoles, associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Dr. Tein-Min Tan, associate professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM).
Seniors from ECE include Nathalie Capati, Norman Chan, Ian Gallagher (team captain), Adam Hollock and Yuen Kwan Lo. MEM’s seniors on the team include Ryan Garis, Nikolas Heid (team captain), Ahmad Hijazi, John Lang and Marwan Mahfooz.
The team recently received an open invitation to compete in Italy this September and is working to complete a competitive car for the race.
