"I am interested in electronic clothing because of the exciting applications for textiles that can communicate, textiles that can sense vital signs for biomedical and military applications, and integrated electronics in everyday clothing for aesthetic expression." ~ Kristy Jost, NSF GRFP Recipient"Ph.D. student Kristy Jost (advisor: Yury Gogotsi) is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP). The fellowship provides funding for three years of graduate stipend and tuition support, as well as opportunities to conduct research internationally.
Jost's research objectives focus on developing "smart" and electronic textiles by combining high tech fashion design techniques with advanced techniques in materials science and nanotechnology. "I am interested in electronic clothing because of the exciting applications for textiles that can communicate, textiles that can sense vital signs for biomedical and military applications, and integrated electronics in everyday clothing for aesthetic expression," says Jost. "My main research projects have primarily focused on integrated textile energy storage because energy storage is a fundamental challenge for the field since all smart textiles will need a way to be powered." Jost received her B.S. in Fashion Design from Drexel in 2011.
Jost is the eighth student from the department to receive the fellowship. Past recipients include B.S. student Prineha Narang (advisor: Yury Gogotsi), B.S./M.S. student Holly McIlwee (advisor, Caroline Schauer), M.S. student Alex Moseson (advisor: Michel Barsoum), and Ph.D. students Stephen Niezgoda (advisor: Surya Kalidindi), Kris Behler (advisor: Yury Gogotsi), María Pía Rossi (advisor: Yury Gogotsi), and John Chmiola (advisor: Yury Gogotsi).
