Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics senior Gang Qiu was named an honoree for the 2012 Most Outstanding Master’s Award on Friday, June 1 by the Drexel Graduate Student Excellence Committee.
Qiu, a BS/MS student, was nominated by Ying Sun, PhD for his research in Pore Scale Modeling of Transport Phenomena in Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries. His research, in collaboration with Emin Kumbur, PhD, and his students, examines transport mechanisms in Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries at microscopic scales with the hope that it will one day facilitate improvements in renewable energy sources. Qiu discovered his interest in thermal fluid sciences and modeling after completing a Co-op experience at PECO and hopes to continue working in that area after graduation.
Qiu is the sole winner in the master’s category. “It is definitely humbling. I know there are a lot of really good master’s students in the [Drexel] College of Engineering,” Qiu said.
He will be presented his award by Provost Mark Greenberg during the Doctoral Student Celebration in Mandell Theater on June 15 and will be honored during graduation when he receives both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
