Professor Emin C. Kumbur of the Drexel University Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics Department had his research on grid scale energy storage featured on the Institute Electrical and Electronics Engineers Spectrum website. The article, Grid Tech Combines Supercapacitors and Flow Batteries, explains Kumbur’s work on developing a system to harness and store energy for long periods of time.
Kumbur, along with professor Yuri Gogotsi of the Drexel Materials Science and Engineering Department developed an electrochemical flow capacitor that a uses slurry of highly porous carbon particles that are suspended in a liquid electrolyte medium to store energy.
