For the second year in a row, Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania departments of Materials Science and Engineering will host Philly Materials Science and Engineering Day Saturday, February 4, 2012 in the Bossone Research Enterprise Center at 31st and Market Streets.  Free and open to the general public, the day is based on MAKING STUFF with David Pogue, a four-part NOVA documentary series about the world of materials.

Nearly everything in the world around us is made of something-stuff.  Materials Science & Engineering is the study of that stuff-materials-and how we use the stuff to create useful things for everyday life. Philly Materials Science and Engineering Day will introduce the general public to explore some of the stuff the world is made of and to learn about how materials impact us every day.

The day will explore faculty and student-led hands-on demonstrations as well as faculty talks about materials that include the following:

  • Mix hip-hop and materials science with Grand Hank
  • Learn how nature inspires science
  • Make a liquid crystal thermometer
  • Try some liquid nitrogen ice-cream
  • Stump a scientist
  • Help build a carbon nanotube
  • …and more
