CoE Department Head Wins AWWA Award

Charles Haas, L.D. Betz professor of environmental engineering and department head of civil, architectural and environmental engineering has been selected to receive the John Leal Award from the American Water Works Association.

The Dr. John L. Leal Award is presented annually for distinguished service to the water profession in commemoration of the sound medical/public health expertise and the courageous leadership advancing public health that characterized the life of Dr. John L. Leal. John Laing Leal was a physician and water treatment expert who, in 1908, was responsible for conceiving and implementing the first disinfection of a U.S. drinking water supply using chlorine.

This award will be presented to Dr. Haas at the Annual Meeting of the AWWA during the opening session on June 12, 2017 in Philadelphia.

Past recipients include Michael McGuire in 2014, who received his master’s and PhD in environmental engineering at Drexel's College of Engineering in 1972 and 1977, respectively.
