Materials Science and Engineering Welcome Message

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is home to faculty engaged in cutting-edge research in the synthesis, development and application of advanced materials including ceramics, composites, electronic materials, metals and polymers and the evolving fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology and energy applications.

Materials faculty and students have received numerous national and international awards from professional and technical societies for their excellence in research and teaching.  The faculty boasts three NSF CAREER awardees and a PECASE awardee.  The department houses several advanced materials processing and characterization research centers, as well as laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment.  Due to expansion in emerging areas, the department has established major research activities in nanomaterials and nanotechnology, biomaterials and biosensors, multi-functional materials and coatings, materials design, materials for energy and opto-electronics and photonics.  A core-enabling technology for all the engineering disciplines, the area of materials science and engineering has a very promising future.  To learn more about our department, please visit the Materials Science and Engineering website.
