MS in Peace Engineering

New in Fall 2017

The 48 credit MS Degree in Peace Engineering is open to students from STEM backgrounds and combines case-based courses with experiential learning internships and research development efforts that are driven by the needs of the peacebuilding community. Students will engage in online and face-to-face courses to develop advanced skills, understand the human dimensions of conflict, and develop a toolbox of transferable skills such as negotiation and project management. These skills will enable graduates from the program to succeed in peacebuilding and as leaders in STEM professions. 

Technical Focus Areas

Students will have the opportunity to participate in technical focus sequences in order to focus their peace engineering skills in some of the following areas:

Experiential Learning

Students will participate in a 3-month experiential learning internship that will provide them with a hands-on experience with potential future employers in some of the following areas:

Industry

Advance the role of Peace Engineering in international business, finance, resource extraction and consulting sectors

NGOs

Engineer solutions for domestic and multinational organizations involved in peacebuilding, stabilization, relief, and development.

Government

Join the Diplomatic Corps or Civil Service. Understand and influence policy related to technology and conflict

Plan of Study

Core Peacebuilding Competencies (9 credits)

Three courses that introduce peacebuilding, strategic conflict management, and essential peacebuilding skills.

Peacebuilding Seminars (3 credits)

Weekly seminars will provide an opportunity for students to learn about conflict scenarios from the perspectives of both peacebuilders and engineers.

Core Engineering Competencies (9 credits)

Systems level assessment and project management applied to peacebuilding.

Research Competencies (9 credits)

Research Competencies train students how to design methodologies for data collection, data analysis, data visualization, and the design of engagements.

Social Dimensions of Conflict (6 credits)

To develop an understanding of issues pertinent to conflict, students will select two courses from approved offerings in Public Health, Politics, Policy, Government, Sociology, Anthropology and Ethnography, and Education.

Technical Focus Areas (6 credits)

To develop mastery in a technical field applicable to peacebuilding, students will select complete two courses in one of thirteen available sequences (outline above).

Experiential Learning and Thesis (6 credits)

Students will participate in up to two quarters of experiential learning with approved community service organizations, peacebuilding agencies, and NGOs, and will be encouraged to develop thesis questions that relate to these experiences.
