Drexel is the birthplace of the barcode, which revolutionized commerce and industry, and of MXenes, the two-dimensional materials behind innovations in energy, medicine, communications and more.
Dozens of researchers within the College of Engineering are counted among the top 2% in their field for research impact. Notably, Yuri Gogotsi, PhD, ranks #20 worldwide for career impact in the field of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Michel Barsoum, PhD, #10 worldwide for Materials, and Alexander Fridman, PhD #313 for Applied Physics.
Drexel has consistently appeared on the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association’s list of the world’s top 100 universities for patents granted. With 34 issued patents from 2022 where Drexel was listed as the first assignee, the University is listed at 95th place.
In 2021, the National Academy of Engineers inducted Charles Haas, PhD, LD Betz Professor of Environmental Engineering to its ranks. This is one of the highest honors for engineers, and one of the many of the achievements of the Drexel Engineering faculty.
